Why The Office Is Still One Of The Best Show On Television

A mockumentary about a failing paper company run by a half-witted but well-meaning boss: does that sound like an interesting show? Well, you would think that you can probably watch it once, but we can bet that you will not stop at that! The Office is considered to be one of the best sitcoms on American TV. Even though it went off air more than five years ago, it is still one of the most binge-worthy shows out there.

So, what is it that makes the show so endearing? Let us look at a few reasons:

  1. Relatable situations and characters
The show brought a much-needed change to television by portraying situations and characters that people could relate to, whether it in the context of office politics or the personal relationships between the coworkers. The writers made it a point to highlight trivial, everyday situations that may otherwise seem too mundane, such as the annual fire drill or the theft of office supplies. People could also relate to the characters, who were all stuck in a job that none of them wanted to do, with coworkers they could barely tolerate, in a workplace that they were not particularly fond of.

  1. Cringe comedy
If you are someone who laughs through uncomfortable silences or enjoys watching public humiliation, then The Office will not disappoint you. Watching the show can sometimes feel almost too uncomfortable. The characters are mostly awkward, and some of the things that they do super cringy. Who can forget when Michael ignorantly calls out Stanley for a photo of a girl at his desk, which he says is fetishizing Catholic school girls, when in fact the photo was that of the latter’s daughter? But these are some of the best moments in the show, when the characters are at their most vulnerable and human, which is also what makes the comedy dark and challenging.

  1. “Identity theft is not a joke, Jim!”
The Office gave birth to some of the most iconic dialogues in TV. Between Jim and Dwight’s prank wars, Michael’s I-know-it-all attitude and all the other shenanigans in the office, there was no shortage of funny one-liners that have now become as popular as the show itself. For instance, almost everything Michael said was a joke.

“Sometimes I’ll start a sentence and I don’t even know where it’s going. I just hope I find it along the way.” – Michael Scott

“Would I rather be feared or loved? Easy. Both. I want people to be afraid of how much they love me.” – Michael Scott

“I’m not superstitious, but I am a little stitious.” – Michael Scott
